A man is considered to be the leader, the dominating one and what not but when it comes to negative stuff that people say, in terms of body shaming, appearance and clothing, even men are no exception. In our society boys have to face as many problems as a girl does but nobody listens to them. For a guy, a typical statement is said; mard ka bacha ban, how come you never hear anyone say aurat ka bacha ban? When the bacha is literally made there. Ironic. The reason is that choosing to be not rough and tough is considered a feminine trait and choosing to act, or even dress up in not so manly ways are considered a crime. The way we cheekily comment on our boys’ clothing is hilarious, as well as upsetting because it looks like a never-ending process.
Ye larkiyon wala rang kyun pehna hai? (Why are you wearing a feminine color?)
Okay, so we as a society are seriously judgmental about colors. We are some serious racists, I tell you! And we don’t spare the color of the shirt a guy wears! If a guy wears yellow then you are an open target for stuff like bhai, maayun kab baith rahe ho? Like what even. And goodness gracious! If you wear a shade of purple or pink, it’s game over for you pal. Be ready to hear stuff about you probably being a homosexual.
Patloon kuch zyada tight nai hai? (Aren’t your jeans a bit too tight?)
Skinny jeans are the in thing for men nowadays and they look kind of cool but if you’re a guy from a brown family then at least once in the tenure of your skinnies you’ve been told that you look like a girl because apparently, only girls can wear slim fit clothing. Like, give them a break.
Ye kurta itna bhaari kyun hai, bhai? (Why is your kurta so heavily studded?)
Men wear designer wear too, yes, sometimes, the designs go out of hand but on most occasions, they look perfectly fine. Now, if your kurta has some pattern or some shiny sequin stuff on it then you certainly qualify to be told that you look way too gawdy or you are dressed up as a dulhan. Nope, we aren’t quite accepting of the latest fashion trends.
Aaj itna hero kyun ban ke aya hai? (Why are you looking like a hero today?)
I don’t get it; if a guy wears really casual stuff, he has no dressing sense and if he wears something other than T-Shirt jeans and spices up his look with a few accessories, it makes him look like a movie hero who’s trying too hard? How? Boys don’t wear makeup; at least not in Pakistan and even without it you are made fun of. Hero or zero, just let the poor lad be.
Ye T-Shirt chote bhai ki pehni hai? (Are you wearing your younger brother’s Tee?)
Shirts have different lengths, different colors and different styles. Well, if you’re wearing a color other than brown, blue, green, black or combo of any then you’re a girl and if your T-Shirt’s length is a bit short or longer than usual then you’ll be hearing stuff like: is that your chote bhai ki kameez? And if it’s long then maybe you stole your sister’s Khaadi kurta, who can tell the difference these days anyways?
A girl or a boy, being your own self and staying confident about it is important. Be your own favorite.
