After some pretty careful observation, we have most certainly come to the conclusion that almost every second brown woman that you would come across has, at some point in her life, been through the struggle of weight loss. Blame it on the post-partum fat or simply the racing appetite hormones, almost every other khatoon in her mid-forties has battled weight gain or has just given up the fight overall and decided to ‘just live with it’ (Women like Mahnoor Baloch are most certainly an exception, folks!) So why is weight gain such a hot topic within women in Pakistan? We have listed below six reasons why they gain because of certain medical reasons.
Highly common in women, this is a condition that occurs due to an underactive thyroid gland which releases the hormone thyroxin that basically controls the body’s heart rate and metabolism. With an underactive thyroid, a body’s metabolic rate would be slower and this leads to weight gain.
Pretty obvious, no? But a lot of us believe the notion that only a growing baby inside the womb causes weight gain in women, whereas that doesn’t quite explain how some women would only be seen with a bulging belly and no other part of the body gains weight. This is because many desi aunties make you believe that you gotta eat double just because the fetus needs foods and so does you. Because of this, many women tend to overeat during pregnancy which causes unnecessary weight gain.
Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
This is a medical health condition which severely affects the functioning of the ovaries in the female reproductive system. Common symptoms of PCOS include excessive hair growth, which can also include facial hair, irregularities in the menstrual cycle, complications with conception and most significantly weight gain around the abdomen.
If you are a sugar kay mareez and you take insulin on regular basis to control your blood glucose levels, you are most likely to gain weight. This is the case with people suffering from both, diabetes type 1 as well as diabetes type 2. Also, many diabetics think it’s okay to binge on sweet and fattening food just because they are taking insulin anyway.
It’s pretty much understood how the weird hormonal changes that a woman goes through after her mid-forties play around pretty much with her appetite patterns and certainly result in her gaining weight, especially around the waist area. Which is why many khawateen complain of having a muffin top when they reach their fifties.
Desi khawateen, if not purely women in general, are bound to stress on each and every tiny little thing going around. Whether it’s something going on in her immediate family or the family in that saas bahu serial, aunty jee’s stress level would cross a hundred. But little does she know how all that stressing can slow down her body making it prone to weight gain a lot more. It’s up to you to decide whether stuff is worth stressing or nah.
